Design Research on RPA Installer Process

Context

The current installation process of IBM RPA was identified by the product management team as one of the reasons that led to users quitting the 30-day trial and not converting as customers. This problem prompted the team to seek out a re-design of the installation process and transform it to a process that would improve prospective customer’s experience with the tool. Iterations of new designs were user tested via usertesting.com.

The objective of the usability testing was to get quick feedback on the install process designs of IBM RPA in order to iterate on the next version on the installer.

Method Used: Usability Testing

Participants: 10 Automation Developers

Timeframe: 2 weeks

Unmoderated Sessions via UserTesting.com

10 automation developers were recruited for testing

3 test scenarios were chosen to provide a variety of installation situations and to compare results to the previous round of moderated testing

  1. Server Installation - Quick

  2. Server Installation - Custom

  3. Client Installation

Readout

A readout was delivered to the team that highlighted findings and recommendations to the RPA team.

Feasible recommendations were placed on the design’s priorities to fix immediately. Larger-scale recommendations were placed on PM’s feature roadmap.

  • Multiple rounds of testing were conducted. Each round delivered findings and recommendations… (1/3)

  • And many recommendations were implemented into the next iterations of designs… (2/3)

  • Leading to constant improvement and a lower amount of issues with each set of designs. (3/3)
